Once you’ve used a computer running its operating system from an SSD instead of a conventional HDD, you’ll never go back. Crucial’s models are the market leaders, providing affordable lightning-fast storage for any new or retro-fit PC build. They are especially beneficial when used as system/boot drives, providing an unbelievable improvement in PC boot-up times, especially for Microsoft Windows systems.

Features

  1. High-performance alternative to hard disk drives
  2. Robust 2.5 inch form factor with no moving parts
  3. Read speeds up to 355MB/s
  4. SATA 6Gb/s interface
  5. High-speed Synchronous NAND
  6. Three-year warranty

The need for speed

If you’re looking for unhindered speed, Crucial’s RealSSD C300 is here! The new 2.5-inch Crucial RealSSD C300 drive offers mobile and desktop users scorching-fast read speeds of up to 355MB/s. And because it has no moving parts, you will also enjoy a quieter, cooler, and more durable storage solution and a better alternative to a traditional notebook hard drive.

Improved data transfers

Designed with high-speed synchronous MLC NAND, advanced controller technology, optimised NAND management, and the new SATA 6Gb/s interface, these drives dramatically improve data transfers for bandwidth-demanding applications like audio and video.

Push your performance

The improvement in boot time and application load times push performance to new levels at the desktop too. You will experience improvement across a variety of common tasks such as viewing and editing photos, video, music and other media, gaming, communications, productivity and security.

Memory Experts

The Crucial brand of memory has long been synonymous with reliability and high-performance. Our expertise in NAND process technology enables us to optimise the performance and durability of Crucial solid-state drives.

Guaranteed compatible

Crucial RealSSD C300 series employ a standard hard drive interface and dimensions, so it is an easy storage upgrade for most notebooks.

Mounting hardware

To install a 2.5 inch SSD in a standard PC case which has 3.5 inch HDD bays, we recommend purchase of the Scythe Twin Mounter 2.5 Rev.B, 2.5 to 3.5inch Adapter.

Unleash the speed

If you want to take advantage of the 6GB/s performance of these Crucial SSDs then you will need to have a motherboard that has SATA 6GB/s. This is a new protocol, so not all motherboards will have this. However, all is not lost because the Highpoint Rocket R620 will bring SATA 6GB/s compatibility to your system, so there is no need to buy a new motherboard.

If you’re after the fastest SSD, but don’t have the £500 to drop on the C300 256GB, or the £300 for the 128GB drive, the 64GB version is a great choice. (Product reviewed: C300 64GB)

  • Custom PC

It delivers superb performance across the board, but it needs a decent SATA 6Gbps port to get the best out of it. The C300 is at the top of the Custom PC hardware wishlist. The C300 256GB is easily the most desirable SSD on the market today. (Product reviewed: C300 256GB)

  • bit-tech.net

Put simply, the Crucial RealSSD C300 256GB is a monster of an SSD. It’s the first SATA 6Gbps drive that delivered the kinds of superb speed that the new bus is capable of, with staggeringly fast performance right across the board, regardless of file compression. However, it does need a fast SATA 6Gbps to get most from this SSD. (Product reviewed: C300 256GB)

  • PC Format

Crucial’s latest falls into what we’d call the fourth generation SSD category. Benefiting from all the lessons learned during the dodgy early days of SSD engineering, it’s literally the latest technology. Verdict: 85%. (Product reviewed: C300 128GB)

SSD FTW

,

I bought this after I already had a 64GB version, so I knew what I was getting. It’s an SSD, so it’s smaller, lighter, cooler and faster. That’s an impressive checklist but the cost is low capacity. 128GB isn’t much space these days.

Oh, and the other cost is cost. SSDs cost ~10 times as much money as HDDs, so I’ve docked this a star for its low value for money and high price per GB. It’s fine if you have a Media PC that you are streaming content to, but if you need to store content you’ll need to buy a HDD too which will negate the advantage of its silent operation.

Comparing it to other SSDs, it’s at the head of its class and I can’t fault its operation and performance. You might spend a lot of money but you get what you pay for.

One Day All Hard Drives Will Be Like This!

,

I thought long and hard before investing in a smallish hard drive costing over £250.00! After all, you can just about get a budget computer for that price. It wasn’t an easy decision I can tell you.

Would it be quiet? Would it fit securely inside my desktop tower case? Would it perform? Well, to the first question; rest assured this drive is silent, completely silent, absolutely silent. So, no problems there.

Bearing in mind that these drives were initially aimed at the laptop market, where all the identical measurements enable a quick and easy swap-out, it is little wonder that the desktop pc user is going to come across a little problem and a bit more expense. You are going to have to get an adapter to support this precious drive in safety. I used an Akasa solid state drive 2.5” Mounting Kit (AK-MX010) which will cost in the region £5-12 and enabled me to make good use of a redundant floppy bay.

Did it perform? Beyond all my expectations. My PC now boots to a usable desktop in less than 70 seconds, whereas with an ordinary 7200rpm hard drive, I could be waiting in excess of 3 minutes. Shut down times are equally as swift. In general use, the Crucial REAL SSD 128Gb delivers the goods every time. Everything runs quicker. It’s a real pleasure.

On a final point, most pc users will only be using half the capable 6Gb/s transfer rate. This is because nearly all motherboards are limited to 3Gb/s from the standard SATA II interface. However, help is at hand because many of the new PCI-ex USB 3.0 cards come with one or more handy 6Gb/s SATA II ports. I’m just about to buy one…!

In conclusion, my only reservation was the lack of an adapter that could easily have been included in the package by Crucial (they don’t even give you any mounting screws, which has to be a bit mean).

If you’re looking for a noticeable increase in speed from your pc or laptop, forget the extra ram or CPU upgrade, invest in a Crucial REAL SSD boot drive. It’s a REAL joy!

Great product, but don't use 64GB for Vista

,

I recently bought this Crucial 64GB RealSSD to store my operating system, while my programs and data would go on a quiet 5400 rpm hard drive. I anticipated it would improve boot speed and run quietly. This difference it made to both these aspects was extreme, booting in seconds not minutes and absolutely quiet because of no moving parts. The speed boost will be even more dramatic if and when I get a SATA 6GB/s compatible motherboard or an adapter.

HOWEVER: The 64GB model is not big enough for Vista! Microsoft states that the minimum requirement for Vista is 40 GB hard drive, but once you install service packs etc it is over 64GB. When I discovered this I bought an OCZ Agility 2 SATA II 3.5 inch Solid State Drive 120GB (convenient as the 3.5” size means it doesn’t need a mounting adapter). I am now using the 120GB SSD for the Vista operating system (it is currently using 74GB) and the 64GB SSD for my programs (only takes about 7GB inc. Adobe Suite).

This Owns.

,

I bought a 64GB SSD to test because it was just cheap enough to try out - It didn’t take long before I bought a pair of 128GB drives because I thought it was so great. Very pleased. I’m an SSD convert now. Despite being the lowest capacity drive I’ve bought in about ten years, 64GB can last a long time if you are economical and can be combined with a larger HHD in an enclosure or NAS to keep the noise away.

The one-two-combo of being so much quieter and so much faster than a HDD just sets SSDs aside as the holy grail of Quiet PCs. I’ve only given this an 8/10 because it loses a star each for its small capacity and high price point but please remember it’s probably the most awesome 8/10 you’ll ever see.
